The incredible work being done by Home Hospice Association deeply resonated with me from the moment I learned about the organization and its commitment to providing compassionate care to individuals facing end of life and supporting families during these challenging times. Drawn towards their mission and how it personally prompted me to reflect on the fragility and beauty of existence, I began a social service work internship with HHA in September of 2023. In late October, nearly two months into my internship, I took part in the charity’s annual fundraising event, the Moonlit Memory Walk.
My Personal Connection to Loss and Grief
This event is not just a walk; it's a symbolic journey that takes place under the gentle glow of the full October moon, bringing together individuals from all walks of life to remember and honour our loved ones. Distracted as I was by the busyness of life - and my studies, especially - I'd been feeling like I hadn't had space to properly grieve the losses of many people whom I loved very much. The idea of taking some time to reflect on these losses and the grief I felt - and still feel - in relation to them really appealed to me. The Moonlit Memory Walk offers a unique way to celebrate the lives of those we've lost. It goes beyond a traditional fundraising event by creating a serene and reflective atmosphere, allowing participants to share stories, offer support, and find solace in the collective strength of community.
Compassion in Action
Pairing this personal opportunity with a chance to help fund one of Home Hospice Association’s vital programs made participating in the Moonlit Memory Walk an obvious choice for me. HHA operates within a philosophy that aligns with my values – ensuring that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, has access to quality end-of-life care. By participating in the Moonlit Memory Walk, I contributed to HHA's mission of providing comfort, dignity, and support to those in their final days. I also helped to foster a supportive environment where everyone could cherish memories of their loved ones.
Love at the Core
At the heart of HHA lies a commitment to love in its purest form. It is a love that extends beyond the boundaries of life, embracing individuals facing the end of their journey and those navigating the intricate path of grief. By volunteering to raise funds, I was able to become an ambassador of this love – helping to ensure that everyone, regardless of circumstance, receives the care and support they deserve. By supporting HHA’s initiatives through the Moonlit Memory Walk, we are not just raising funds; we are illuminating hope and bringing light to the darkest moments of people's lives.
I would invite anyone who is considering being a part of this fundraising event to join - and if there isn't a walk location near you, you can host a walk wherever you are! Together, let's make a positive impact and create a world where we can all face life's final chapter with dignity, comfort, and love.
